Turmeric or Curcuma longa, is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to the Ginger family and has its origins in Southeast Asia. Turmeric is originally a tuberous rhizome with a rough outer skin. The tuberous root has a yellow and dull orange color inside, which on being dried and grounded produces the popular golden spice in the powdered form.

 

The turmeric plant requires warm temperatures between 20 °C and 30 °C and generous rainfall in a year. With long oblong leaves,  the plant can reach 2 metres in height. It typically takes eight to ten months to mature, usually in warm weather, and is harvested only once a year.
